Powder Coating or Liquid Paint: Which to Choose for Metal

How powder coating differs from liquid enamel in durability, appearance and price, and when liquid paint is actually the better choice.

Powder Coating or Liquid Paint

A metal product lives as long as its coating holds. The two main options are powder coating and ordinary liquid paint. Here is how they really differ, and where liquid enamel wins — even though we work with powder ourselves.

The fundamental difference

Liquid paint dries: the solvent evaporates and a film remains. Powder paint is baked: dry powder is applied electrostatically, then the product passes through a curing oven where the powder melts and forms a continuous coating firmly bonded to the metal.

That is why powder gives an even layer with no runs and has no "weak spots" on edges, where liquid paint usually goes on thinner.

Durability

The polymer coating is noticeably harder: it resists scratches, impacts, moisture and UV better. An outdoor product keeps its colour for years, while liquid enamel fades and starts peeling — especially along edges and weld seams.

For fences, gates and open-air structures the difference in service life is measured in years, not months.

When liquid paint is the better fit

Powder has one hard limitation: the product must fit into the curing oven and withstand heating to around 180–200 °C. So liquid paint remains the only option when:

  • the structure is too big for the oven or is already installed on site;
  • the product contains plastic, rubber, electronics or other elements that cannot survive baking;
  • a damaged area needs touching up in place;
  • it is a one-off product and the preparation cost does not pay off.

Why preparation matters more than the paint itself

The most common reason a coating comes off is not the quality of the paint but poor surface preparation. Even new metal carries mill oil, and old metal keeps rust and scale. Without degreasing and cleaning, the coating loses adhesion and starts flaking — whether it is powder or enamel.

In our shop preparation is a mandatory stage, and it is exactly what ensures longevity. More about the technology on the powder coating page.

Not sure which option suits your product? Describe what the structure is and where it will be used — we will give you an honest answer, even if it is "liquid paint is enough for you".
